GARETH

“Well, hey, we can’t eat this,” she says, looking at the burnt food in a way that is adorably comical.

Zany, I think, when I realize I’ve been dwelling on words to put to this goddess. “But I see you've gone to all this effort. That's pretty awesome. We can eat it. I've eaten worse.”

We look at it, then at each other. There’s that jolt again. We break out in hysterics, as if that’s the only way to deal with this weighty chemistry between us.

“Come on. I don't think our first meal should be like this.” She wipes tears of laughter from her eyes.

“All right, you know what? You're new to the neighborhood. I'll take you out and show you my favorite spot. You like Spanish food?”

“Definitely.”

“All right, well, this place is amazing. They make the best paella I have ever had.”

“Okay.”

On the walk to the restaurant, conversation flows easily. It’s so much fun to throw her off; she’s quite concerned with appearing dignified. If I wasn’t already falling for her, watching her concentrate on keeping her shoulders and chin so high after she stumbles over nothing would definitely do it. As it is, I’m thankful to put my arms out and steady her. Even more thankful for the heat that reverberates through me at our touch.
